Duke and Dutches are our Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Duke is our eight-year-old male and we got him from a breeder so we knew his history. However, Dutches is another story. We rescued Dutches so we knew little about her past life or possible problems. When Dutches was five years old when we noticed she was panting a lot and did not look comfortable. Well after a lot of tests we found out, she was in pain due to arthritis. We had a great vet and brilliant team of surgeons. Before going on to surgery our vet had us try some arthritis drugs with Dutches, but it wasn't enough. At one point she could not hold up her head, so surgery looked like the only answer. After the operation, Dutches still needed to be on the arthritis drugs for the pain. Some timer later, we saw that Dutches was again in distress. The drug that she had to have for the pain was causing her liver to shut down.
